About me

I am Ranka Junge, Professor Emeritus at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and founder of Ecotechnology Consulting GmbH. With over 30 years of experience in ecological engineering, sustainable agriculture, and environmental science, I specialize in cutting-edge solutions for soilless cultivation systems, water recycling, and sustainable food production.

My career spans academia and industry, where I’ve led international projects, developed innovative technologies for urban agriculture, and mentored professionals and students worldwide. Leveraging my extensive global network, I collaborate with experts and organizations to advance sustainable practices in frontier agriculture.

  • Developed and implemented aquaponic prototypes for diverse settings in rural and urban environments.
  • Managed national and international projects funded, among others, by European Community, Swiss Federal Commission for Technology and Innovation (Innosuisse), Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG), and Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).
  • Published over 100 scientific articles, book chapters, and research papers in ecological engineering and sustainable agriculture.
  • Served on editorial boards for journals such as Water and Circular Economy and Sustainability.
  • Languages: English, German, Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, Italian, and French.
  • Closing water and nutrient cycles by on-site fish and vegetable production while implementing soilless food production systems such as aquaponics, bioponics, hydroponics and aquaculture.
  • Nature-based solutions for urban environments, including multifunctional green walls, macrophyte-based wastewater treatment, and building-integrated agriculture.
  • Zero-emission building concepts with a focus on water and nutrient recycling.
  • Development of Living-Lab concepts for urban food production.
